If I am a part time student am I still eligible for SANITI services?
YES! All students enrolled through NMIT are eligible to use SANITI services.

Establishment

What does the word SANITI stand for?
SANITI is the acronym for Student Association of Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology Incorporated.
When was SANITI established?
SANITI was registered as an incorporated society in August 2002
Why was SANITI established?
A referendum took place in March 2002 and NMIT students voted to establish a compulsory students association
Who governs SANITI?
NMIT students govern SANITI by way of the Executive council. Members of the Executive are elected twice a year at the AGM [Annual General Meeting] and the SGM [Second General Meeting].
What is the purpose of SANITI?
The purpose of SANITI is to provide an effective student voice and to promote student issues within the institution as well as national student issues.

Membership and Fees

Who has to pay Student Association fees?
All enrolled NMIT students pay student association fees.
Why do I have to pay Student Association fees?
The student association fees are approved at the General meeting each year in line with the SANITI constitution and the Education Amendment Act 2000 section 229a-229d.
What am I entitled to as a member of SANITI?
You are entitled to receive representation and advocacy on all issues relating to your course of study.
Where does my money go and what does it pay for?
Student Association fees are paid directly to NMIT. SANITI receives progress payments throughout the year, and depending on the final number of students (EFTS), a balance payment ‘wash-up’ is paid to SANITI in March the following year.
Student Executive develops a Strategic/Operational Plan and budget to reflect the priorities of the student body your money is used to implement these plans.
These plans and a budget are approved by the student body at the Second General meeting in October each year.
If I do not want to be a member of SANITI can I apply for exemption from membership?
Yes under the Education Amendment Act 2000 you have the right to apply for exemption from membership on the grounds of hardship or conscientious objection. Contact the office for the appropriate policy.
