Membership
All students studying through NMIT are automatically members of SANITI. SANITI membership gives you access to all SANITI services including representation and advocacy.
Under the Education Amendment Act (2000) students have the right to apply for an exemption from Student Association Membership on the grounds of Conscientious Objection or and exemption from payment of levies on the grounds of hardship. For the full exemption policy, please contact the SANITI Office.
The process for exemptions from payment of the SANITI levy or exemption from SANITI membership are contained in the Constitution and Rules and the Membership Policy:

Membership
5.1 Ordinary Members.
All current and full-time and part-time students enrolled at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology shall be ordinary members of the association until March 31 of the year following enrolment. Ordinary members may from time to time be required topay an annual subscription and/or levy at a level decided by a General Meeting of SANITI (INCORPORATED).
5.2 Honorary Members
A person (that has been NMIT student, in the year prior) may be granted a one year honorary membership by resolution of the SANITI (Incorporated) executive. An honorary member shall be voting member of the association.
5.3 Life Member
A person that has been given life membership, by the members at a General Meeting of students. A life member shall not be a voting member of the association.
5.4
A student may apply for exemption from membership of the Association on the grounds of conscientious objection of hardship.
Membership shall cease in the following circumstances:
- When a members' subscription expires, or
- When a member resigns by giving written notice to the President to that effect; or
- By expulsion if such a member has willfully disobeyed any of the rules of the Association or such other action which is decided at a General Meeting of students is prejudicial to the interests of the Association. The vote to expel a member must be carried by a two thirds majority vote, after giving the member the opportunity to be heard.
- By completing the conscientious objection form, available from the Student Association Nelson- Marlborough Institute of Technology Incorporated (SANITI(INCORPORATED)).
