Support - Harassment

SANITI takes a proactive role in helping students who experience bullying and other forms of harassment. It is important that if you feel that you are being harassed by another person that you tell someone you feel comfortable talking to and trust so it can be resolved and you can get back to studying and enjoying your time at NMIT.

What is Harassment?

Harassment can be a single incident, or a number of incidents. It can be verbal, such as inappropriate jokes, shouting and/or threats. It can be demeaning, racist, sexist, or homophobic. It can also be physical: pinching, pushing, punching, and so on. Harassment can be sexual in nature, from unwanted looks and inappropriate advances, or inappropriate touching and sexual assault.

Harassment is any form of behavior that is:

  • unwanted
  • offensive
  • inappropriate
  • threatening

What to do if you are being harassed

If you feel you are being harassed by anyone, tell them that their behavior is unwanted and tell them to stop. If they continue to harass you, tell someone you trust and feel comfortable talking to. It can be a family member, close friend, a flatmate, or a SANITI or NMIT staff member.

A formal meeting can be arranged aimed at resolving the situation. A formal complaint can also be laid.

SANITI takes harassment very seriously and will provide any student with the help and support with trained and experienced staff. SANITI operates with strict confidentiality so your privacy is always respected. If you are unsure of what to do, the best thing is to talk to one of the staff members.
